Rebecca Dobbs
Died 29th September 1849
Above: Rebeccas burial record, as Dodds
Rebecca Dobbs is on Rawlinson’s list of the cholera victims, under that surname. She died age 56, on 29th September 1849, so was born about 1793.
Rebecca lived in Clayport, one of the worst affected areas in Alnwick . She also died on one of the days when many people were lost; one of 17 to die on that ‘calm and cloudy, and very wet ‘ day. She was buried in a mass grave at the rear of St Michael’s Church.
The GRO record of her death says Rebecca was called Dobbs, but the Parish records say she was Dodds. A Rebecca Dodds or Hindson was baptised in Newburn, on 2nd April 1792, born to Alice Dodds and James Hindson. Was this the same person? Do you know different?
Research on the 136 dead has been carried out by the Alnwick Branch of the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society. If you have any more information that can help us regarding this or any other of the cholera victims, we would love to hear from you.
