Mary and William Ramsay
Died 5th October, 30th September 1849
Above and Below: Burial records for Mary and William
Mary Ramsay age 34 and William Ramsay age 4 died on 5th October and 30th September 1849 respectively.
They both died of cholera as they were in the Rawlinson’s report, but the facts are slim and to some extent contradictory. Notably Mary was recorded by Rawlinson as aged 34, and on her burial record she was said to be 44.
We had assumed that Mary and William were related, but according to the Rawlinson Report, Mary was from Clayport Street and William was from Paikes Street, or Peak’s Street as it was spelt.
Because of the ambiguities it is very hard to find any concrete facts about either person, so we didn’t find much more about these poor people. We do know that neither was baptised in Alnwick although both died here, so it is very difficult to know where to begin looking. There were no newspaper obituaries of either to help us, for example.
