In 1911 Ovens was serving with & based at the Regiment's Depot at Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Background:
Born about 1892 at Rothbury, Northumberland, the son of Walter T. & Isabella Ovens.

The 1901 Census shows the family living at Reedsmouth Hamlet. Walter Snr. (50) was a Railway Passenger Guard. Oven's mother was also 50 & his siblings were: Isabella (14) & William (7). George Wilson, a 29 years-old Railway Porter was also boarding with the family.

Resident at Edinburgh at the time of enlistment.
