Background:
Born on 25 June 1884, at 29, Belsay Place, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, the son of the late George Reed, by his wife, Elizabeth J. (née Rowley), of Sea View House, Heatherleazes, Warkworth, Northumberland.

An Accountant by profession. Reed worked, first, in England for North East Railway, then at St. John, Canada.

Reed had two brothers & a sister. His father was a Tailor & Cutter by profession.
