Service History:
Enlisted September 1914. Gazetted in the same month, promoted Captain in December 1914.
On the morning of 3 July 1916, the 11th Cheshire's attacked German positions from their trenches just north east of Authuille, alongside the 8th Border & 2nd South Lancashire battalions with which they formed the 75th Infantry Brigade of the 25th Division. They attacked the line on the left of what was called the Leipzig Redoubt. Many men were cut down in front of the wire & the few who did get into the German line were killed or captured. The 11th Cheshire's lost 321 men in the attack, including 14 officers, the Commanding Officer & all Company Commanders. Murray was one of those Company COs.
