Murray had been a Lewis Gunner & fell in the very heavy fighting involved in the capture of Wancourt Ridge. The village itself had been captured on 12 April 1917.

Background:
Native of Berwick-upon-Tweed, the son of Andrew & Eleanor Murray, of Middleton Hall, Milfield Hill, Wooler, Northumberland.

Pre-war occupation: Fireman on the North British Railway.
