Service History:
Miller enlisted at Alnwick, Northumberland on 20 January 1916, at the age of 21. He was 5 ft 9 ins tall.

Formerly 29427, Northumberland Fusiliers. He had joined the 15th Northumberland Fusiliers on 13 June 1916.

He left Folkestone 12 September 1916 & arrived at Boulogne the same day. The following day he arrived at Etaples & was posted to the 8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was then posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Duke of WellingtonÂ’s Regiment on 19 September & joined the 2nd West Riding Regiment in the Field on 21 September 1916.

Background:
Born 1894 at Whittingham, the son of William & Bella Ann (née Morton) Miller.

In 1901 Miller lived at Whittingham with his parents, William (42; a General Farm Servant) & Bella (38), & his siblings Dorothy (13), Elizabeth J. (2), & William E. (1).

By 1911 he was working as a Horseman on the Farm, living at Low Hedgely, Powburn; his father was a Cowman. There was a further addition to the family with brother James (5).

Pre-enlistment occupation: Ploughman.

In 1917 his mother was living at Rock Moor House but by 1919 his parents & two brothers were living at High House, Alnwick. His sister Dorothy was now Mrs Dunn & living at Foxton Hall Farm. Elizabeth was at Foxton Hall, presumably in service.
