Service History:
Enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 23 October 1915. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 25 January 1916. Promoted Lieutenant in July 1917. Served with the Expeditionary Force in France & Flanders from February 1917.

Maclagan was killed in action near Arras, on 1 August 1918. His Commanding Officer wrote: 'I feel that I have lost a firm friend & most excellent officer.'

Another officer wrote: 'He was extremely popular with his men, always bright, a very good officer & hard worker.' A third comrade wrote: 'He was always so cheerful & kind.'

Background:
Born on 2 April 1897, at Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, the second son of the late Philip Smirton Maclagan (Solicitor) by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (née Graham; daughter of the late James Graham) of Rockwood House, Rothbury, Northumberland.

Educated at Royal Grammar School, Appleby Grammar School, & Armstrong College, Newcastle.
