Service History:
The Royal Naval Air Service was constituted on 1 July 1914. Lord was given a temporary commission the following November.
On the night of 9 August 1915 a Zeppelin raid took place on the east coast of England. Lord was one of the pilots sent up to engage the enemy. Weather conditions were poor, with thick patchy fog, & he was killed attempting to land.
Lord was given a lavish military funeral.

Background:
Born on 10 January 1892, at Newcastle upon Tyne, the fifth child & third son of Albert Alexander Lord, by his wife, Emma Louise (née Greaves), of Highfield Hall, Newcastle.
Grandson of Sir Riley Lord, of Felton Park, Northumberland, three times Mayor of Newcastle during the 1890's & instrumental in raising funds to build the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Qualified as a Motor Engineer before learning to fly at the Beatty School in Hendon. Took his Aviator's Certificate at Hendon Aerodrome, flying a Wright biplane, on 27 September 1914.
One of two sons lost: see, also, Captain Roland Lord (Northumberland Fusiliers, 3rd [Reserve] Battalion, attached to 1st Battalion; Killed in action 8 October 1918).
