'In Memory of the Fallen: Amble & surrounding area' (compiled by Jane Dargue, Jim Donnelly & Helen Lewis; Gloss Magazines Ltd.; 2014; page 15) records Johnson's DCM citation:

'For conspicuous gallantry on a number of occasions as a stretcher bearer, particularly on three specific occasions when he showed great bravery & coolness in tending & removing the wounded under heavy fire.'
