Enlisted at Belford, Northumberland.

Background:
Born 1897 at Bamburgh, Northumberland, the son of Alexander Hope (b. 1869) of Prendwick, Whittingham & his wife Georgina (b. 1875; d. 1913).

In 1901 Hope, age 4, was living with his parents, older brother James (b. 1895) & younger sister Isabella (b. 1901) at Beadnell Farm, Beadnell, Northumberland. Also living at the same address was GeorginaÂ’s widowed uncle Andrew, age 48, working as a Horseman on the farm; Isabella Learmouth, a widow aged 85, listed as Mother-in-law but too old to be GeorginaÂ’s mother; & Isabella Learmouth, age 50, who was single & listed as an aunt so could be AlexanderÂ’s sister. She also worked on the farm.

In 1911 Hope was living at New Shoreston with his parents & brother James, 16, who were all Farm Labourers, along with sister Annie, age 8, brothers John William (4) & Alexander (2). Also, maternal aunt Isabella Learmouth, 62, & maternal Grandmother-in-Law Isabella Learmouth, age 95, & a boarder, John English, a 27 years-old Freestone Quarryman. The family later moved to Prendwick.
