Background:
Born in 1893 at Overgrass Cottage, the son of Thomas (b. 1861 at Bamburgh, Northumberland; a Rabbit Catcher), & his wife Margaret (b. 1861).

One of two sons lost: see, also, Private Richard Matthew Hall (Regimental service #2155; Northumberland Fusiliers, 1/7th Battalion Territorial Force; Died 1 June 1915)

In 1891, prior to Hall's birth, his parents were living at Eglingham Terrace, Eglingham, Northumberland, with their daughter Elizabeth A. (b. 1883 at Branton), & sons John (b. 1885, also at Branton), & George P. (b. 1888 at Moor Laws). Hall's elder brother, Richard Matthew, was born shortly after the Census date (b. 1891 at Roddam).

In 1901 the family were living at Mile End, Glanton. Apart from Hall & his siblings mentioned above, there were three more children - Isabel (b. 1897); Arthur H. (b. 1899, like Isabel, born at Swarland Kennels); & Edmund (b. 1901 at Mile End).

The 1911 Census records Hall living at Branton, Powburn, Northumberland, with his widowed father, their housekeeper, Mary Jane Irving Potts (34), brothers Richard, Arthur, & Edmund, & a new addition, Robert Morris M. (b. in 1904 in Norfolk).

Both his father & brother, Richard, were Rabbit & Mole Catchers, & the younger children were at school.

Hall, at that time, was lodging at Ilderton Moor, near Wooperton, working as an Assistant Gamekeeper.
