Background:
Born 1895, at Chevington, Northumberland, the second son (of 3) of John Grey (b. about 1861; at Woodhorn, Northumberland; in 1911, a Colliery Cashier; d. 31 March 1933), by his wife, Sarah Ann Grey (née Kendall; b. about 1867; at Otley, Yorkshire; d.27 April 1947), of Manor House, Broomhill, Acklington, Northumberland.

Elder brother William was born about 1891. In 1911 he was an Apprentice Coalmining Engineer. Younger brother Norman Kendall was born about 1901.

Educated at Morpeth Grammar School.

Family history says John Grey was eventually made Company Secretary; was governor of the local school; a Master of the Freemasons; & gave advice to Alnwick District Council.

A War Gratuity of £64-2s-6d was sent to his father. Probate was granted to his father in 1917 for Effects valued at £135-12s-10d.
