Background:
Born on 14 January 1889, at Bilton Banks, near Shilbottle, Northumberland, one of ten children of Alexander & Mary Susan Arries. Christened at Shilbottle Church.

The family moved to Bedlington in the 1890s.

In 1911, aged 22, Arries was working as a Coal Miner & living with his parents & siblings at 10, North Terrace, Bedlington.
