Background:
Born about 1897, at Longframlington, Northumberland, the second son of Joseph (b. 1863 at Longframlington; a Shepherd) & Mary Common (b. 1859, also at Longframlington). The 1901 Census records two other sons, John (9) & Robert (1), & a daughter, Mary E..
The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 (available via www.ancestry.co.uk) records £5-18s-7d (including £4-5s War Gratuity) having been paid to the Executor of Common's father's estate, Hugh James Percy.
The 1911 Census records Common as visiting his Grandparents, John (b. about 1835 at Longframlington; described as an Agriculturist, an employer) & Mary Dixon (b. about 1830, at Felton, Northumberland). They had married in 1859 & had six children, of whom only three were, then, alive.
