Born about 1896, at Widdrington, Northumberland, the eldest son of William (b. about 1869, at Dam House, Ponteland, Northumberland; employed as a Household Joiner) & Isabella Thompson (b. 1870, at Wooperton, Northumberland), of Guyzance, Acklington, Northumberland.

In 1911, Thompson was employed as a Carter.

His two brothers & four sisters were all born at Acklington - Robert Ernest (12); Marion (9); Jane (6); William (4); & twins Winnifred & Lena (1).
