Background:
Born in 1896, at Wooler, Northumberland, the youngest of twelve children of John Thompson & his wife Isabella (née Rogerson).

John Thompson died in 1897 or thereabouts, shortly followed by his wife, perhaps in 1899 or 1900. Thereafter, Thompson, along with several siblings, was raised by his maternal grandmother until he was 10, when she died.

In 1911, he was a Farm Labourer at Lowick, Northumberland, living with his eldest sister's family.
