Background:
Son of Mary & the late Thomas Ternent, of Chapel Lane, Alnwick, Northumberland.
Thomas Ternent was killed in an accident on 9 December 1901 at Shilbottle Colliery. He was removing some of his clothes about three yards from the face, preparatory to commencing work, when stone suddenly fell from slips in the roof. The place had been examined 1½ hours previously by the deputy, who detected one slip, but considered the roof secure.
Thomas is buried at St. James' Churchyard, Shilbottle, Northumberland, & his headstone also remembers the loss of his son, John.
