Background:
Born in 1882, at Lesbury, Alnmouth, Northumberland, the son of Florence Mary (née Thew) & the late George Tate, JP, (a Land Agent & Farmer) of 12, Percy Terrace, Alnwick.

The 1891 Census records the family living at Brotherwick Hall, Sturton Grange, Warkworth. Two sisters, Ann & Elizabeth, & a brother, George, are recorded along with 4 servants. The family continued to live at Brotherwick Hall until Florence Mary was widowed, in 1917, when she moved to live at Percy Terrace, Alnwick.

Pre-enlistment occupation: Bank Clerk.

In 1919 a War Gratuity of £16-1s-2d was awarded to his mother.
