Enlisted at Amble, Northumberland.

Background:
Born about 1899, at Hermitage Farm, Warkworth, Northumberland, the son of William Smith (a Colliery Shifter below ground), by his wife, Eliza Ellen (née Smailes), of St. Lawrence Terrace, Warkworth.

In 1901 the family lived at New Barns Cottages, Warkworth. In 1911 Smith was living with his parents & 6 siblings - William; Edward; Iris; Jane; Ellen; & Robert - in 3 rooms.
