Background:
Born about 1897, at Warkworth, Northumberland, the son of George & Margaret (Maggie) Smith, of Tynemouth, formerly of Castle Street & Dial Place, Warkworth.

In 1911, Smith's father was a Labourer at Newbrough Colliery, Radcliffe, near Amble, Northumberland.

Smith had a sister, Jane Anne, & a brother, William (Willie).
