There is conflicting data about where Rough was born - Ancestry.co.uk has it as Smeafield, Northumberland, other research, notably the 1911 Census, has it as in County Durham.
He was born in 1894 or 1895, the son of John Robert & Emma (née Rookes) Rough, of Scots Gap, Boulmer, Lesbury, Northumberland.
The 1911 Census shows the family living at Longhoughton Station, where Rough's father was working as a Railway Signalman. Rough, aged 16, was a Rabbit Catcher! His siblings were all at school: Rosanna, (b. 1896); James F. (b. 1899); & John R. (b. 1901); the latter two born in the Parish of Kyloe, Northumberland, probably at Smeafield Station.
