Background:
Born at Bowsden Moor, Lowick, Northumberland about 1894, the oldest son of Thomas (b. about 1870, at Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland; a Farm Servant & Labourer) & Jane (b. about 1873, at Lowick, Northumberland).
The 1911 Census records Romaines' occupation as Farm Labourer. The family lived at West Ord, Berwick-upon-Tweed. Romaines had a younger sister, Grace (b. about 1897; a Farm Servant) & a younger brother, William (b. about 1903).
His Attestation papers (available via Ancestry.co.uk) gave his address at the time of enlistment as Wandy Law, Chathill Northumberland.
