Born in 1893, the son of Peter & Alethea Birtles of Cinder Hill, Scholar Green, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
Pre-enlistment occupation: Second Footman to the Duke of Northumberland; he worked & lived in Alnwick Castle.
