Background:
Born about 1894, at Whittingham, Northumberland, the son of Thomas (b.1853 at Overstone, Northumberland) & Margaret Ann (née Makepeace; b. 1853; at Hexham, Northumberland) Proudlock.

In 1881 Thomas & Margaret were living at Raynards Lodge, Whittingham & he was a Farmer of 38 acres. Also living at the address was eldest son George (b. 1874 at Plashetts, Northumberland) & daughters Eleanor (b.1876), Dorothy Maria (b.1880) & Jane (b.1881, all born at Raynards Lodge).

In 1891 the family were still living at Whittingham. Thomas had added Road Contractor to his occupation, & eldest son George was a Carter. The younger children were still at school. Also listed was Mary A.L. Elliott, a 13 year old visitor.

In 1901 there are 2 more children, Thomas (b.1992) & Proudlock. George & Jane were no longer at home, but a granddaughter Emily J. (b. 1899) is listed, possibly GeorgeÂ’s daughter. Also listed is Henderson A. Elliott, a 16 year-old Railway Porter who was boarding with the family - possibly, he may have been a younger brother to Mary Elliott, who was with the family in 1891.

In 1911, Proudlock's parents, their son Thomas (a Gardener) & granddaughter Emily Jane were living at Ryle Mill, Whittingham. Proudlock, then 17, was lodging at the Old Kennels, Blagden where he was employed as a Domestic Gardener.
