Background:
Born about 1894, the son of Thomas Gladston (b. about 1856; at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland; a House Painter), by his wife, Jane H. (b. about 1859; at Berwick), of 3, Wool Market, Berwick (1911 Census). The family occupied four rooms.
In 1911, Gladston's parents had been married for 29 years during which time they'd had nine children, only four of whom were still living.
Gladston's sibling's were: Mark (b. about 1892; a House Painter); James (b. about 1896; a Chemist's Errand Boy); & Mary (b. about 1898; still at school). All had been born at Berwick.
His 1911 occupation, & maybe his pre-enlistment occupation, was as a Groom, working at an hotel.
