Background:
Born about 1894, at Wooler, Northumberland, the son of John Fettis (b. about 1869; at Wooler; a Chimney Sweep) & his wife, Jane (b. about 1871; at Gospel Hall, Roxburgh, Scotland).

Seven siblings: John James (b. about 1892; in 1911, a Painter); George (b. about 1896; in 1911, a Butcher); Thomas (b. about 1898); Queenie (b. about 1902); Robert (b. about 1904); William (b. about 1907); & Alfred (b. about 1908). The children were all born at Wooler. There had been an eighth sibling who, presumably, died in infancy.

In 1911, the family lived at Church Street, Wooler where they occupied three rooms.

At that time, Fettis's occupation was a Chimney Sweep, presumably working with his father.

By the time he enlisted, Fettis had moved to Annfield Plain, County Durham.

One of two sons lost: see, also, Private Thomas Fettis (Regimental service #M299295; Royal Army Service Corp; Died 2 April 1919).
