Before the war, Chrystal worked in the Alnwick, Northumberland area as a Woods Foreman.
Husband of Ellen Elizabeth (née Joynes; b. 1891 at Retford), of 23, Richard Street, Retford, Nottinghamshire. They married in the first Quarter of 1914. In 1911, Ellen was working as a Domestic Laundry Maid at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.
