Background:
Born 8 April, 1886, the eldest son of Jane Carss (b. about 1855 at Whittingham, Northumberland), of Newton-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, & the late John Carss (b. about 1856 at Embleton; in 1911, a coastal Fisherman).
Before Naval Service, Carss was an Inshore Fisherman, as were two younger brothers, Robert L. (22 in 1911), & James C. (19). He also had a sister, Elizabeth Mary, 17.
Husband of Jessie Watson (formerly Carss; née Thompson), of 5, Sunny Bra, Embleton, Northumberland. The marriage took place during the Second Quarter of 1917.
