Enlisted at Alnwick, Northumberland.
Background:
Born about 1895, at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, the son of Alexander (b. about 1857; at Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland; a Shoe-Maker) & Agness (b. about 1864; at Linlithgow) Borthwick.
In 1911, the couple had been married for 28 years during which time they'd had eleven children, all but one of whom were still living. Eight children are recorded on the 1911 Census living with their parents in 5 rooms at 58, Church Street, Berwick. In addition to Borthwick, they were Hendry (21; a Baker); Agness (20); James (19; a Boot-maker's Shop Assistant); William (13); George (11); Thomas (9); & Grant (7). The younger children were still at School.
Borthwick's occupation in 1911 was that of an Upholsterer's Apprentice.
The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 (available via Ancestry.co.uk) records Borthwick's mother ashis sole legatee.
