Service History:
Bainbridge was commissioned in the Northumberland Fusiliers 1/6th Battalion Territorial Force. He embarked on SS 'Onward' at Folkestone with his battalion on 20 April 1915 &, like his brother, took part in the attack on St. Julien on 26 April. Bainbridge survived the action & served with his battalion in sectors around Messines & Armentières until November 1915 when they were sent to hold the Zillebeke sector near Ypres.
They were still around Zillebeke at the beginning of March 1916 when, on 3 March, 2 officers & 80 men were detailed as a working party under orders of the Royal Engineers for reconstruction of trenches damaged the previous night by heavy enemy shelling. While undertaking this work Bainbridge was wounded
He was sent back to one of the many military hospitals around Etaples, but died twelve days later, from his injuries.

Background:
Known as Wilfred, born in 1884, at Holmwood, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, the fourth son of the late Thomas Hudson Bainbridge, J.P., by his wife, Kate Bainbridge (née Benson), of Eshott Hall, Felton, Northumberland.
Privately educated at the Leys School, Cambridge.
Prior to war he was a Director of Bainbridge & Co., his grandfather's department store in Newcastle.
In his Will, Bainbridge left an estate valued at £36,366. He bequeathed £1,000 each to Newcastle Infirmary, the Soldiers' Home at Spittal Tongues, & the Prudhoe Street Mission.
