Enlisted at Alnwick, Northumberland.
In a letter to his mother, one of Summerell's colleagues wrote:
'Â…He was one of a party repairing the wire entanglements, when he was shot in the back by a sniper. He was taken to the hospital, where he died three hours after being admitted, never regaining consciousness...'.
Died (of wounds received) at No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station.

Son of Tom & Margaret Summerell, of Amble, Northumberland.
Widow & sole legatee, Margaret Summerell, of 13, Long Row, North Radcliffe, Northumberland. The Summerell's had two children.
W. Summerell is not listed on Radcliffe War Memorial however a W. Summerville is listed, as below, for whom there is no trace of a likely match on the CWGC & Ancestry.co.uk websites. Janet Brown (www.newmp.org.uk) wonders if this name may have been confused with that of W. Summerill, which appears a reasonable supposition.
