Storey's regimental service number is close to those of several others commemorated on the Whittingham & Callaly 1914-1918 Memorial Stone, e.g., William Fenwick (17414); Alexander Stephen (17,552); John Tully (17570); Peter Davidson (17400); all of who served with the same regiment & in the same battalion, they're likely to have been well-known to one another &, probably, they'll have been recruited at about the same time.

Background:
Born in 1881 at Whittingham, Northumberland, the son of Annabella (b. about 1855) & the late John (b. about 1850; a General Labourer) Storey, who married in 1878. Also, resident there at the time of enlistment.

One of two sons lost: see, also, Private John Storey (Regimental service #17548; Alexandra, Princess of WalesÂ’s Own [Yorkshire Regiment], 10th [Service] Battalion; Died 4 October 1917).

By 1891, the family lived at Eslington Cottages, Whittingham. Storey's mother was widowed. He had an older sister, Mary (b. about 1879), & three other siblings.

Storey was single in 1901, living & working as a Shepherd for George & Elizabeth Weatherall, farmers at Whittingham.
