Service History:
Enlisted at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, & joined the Seaforth Highlanders at Perth in March 1915.
The battalion sailed to France in August following & soon went into action at Bethune followed by Loos. From October to December they held part of the Zillebeke sector, near Ypres, & from January to June 1916 they held a sector at Armentières.
In June 1916, Smith was given a short spell of home leave & visited his family at West Thirston before returning to the front.
Between 3-20 July 1916 the 9th Division, of which the 9th Seaforth Highlanders formed part, fought on the Somme.

Background:
Born about 1891, at Felton, Northumberland, the eldest of four children of Matthew Henry Smith (a Jobbing Gardener at West Thirston), by his wife, Mary Smith (née Finn).
Smith, like his father, was a Jobbing Gardener.
