Background:
Born in the second quarter of 1883, at Cambois, near Blyth, Northumberland, the son of David Robertson (b. about 1851; at Spittal, Northumberland; a Coal Miner, Hewer), by his wife, Alice (b. about 1857; at Sleekburn, Northumberland).
The 1901 Census records ten siblings: Anna Bell (b. about 1879); John (b. about 1880); Alice Ann (b. about 1884); Jane (b. about 1886); David H. (b. about 1889); William A. (b. about 1891); Sarah (b. about 1893); Mary (b. about 1895); Ellen (b. about 1899); & George (b. 1901). All were born at Cambois other than Anna, who was born at North Seaton, near Ashington, Northumberland.
Educated at Duke's School, Alnwick.
Pre-enlistment occupation: Coal Miner (Hewer).
Husband of Anne (Robertson) who he married about 1904 & by who, in 1911, he had two children - Alice A. (b. about 1905), & David W. (b. about 1907). The family, then, lived at Cambois.
