Jane Berkley

Died 27th September 1849

                                                                   Janes burial record in a mass grave in St Michaels churchyard

Jane Berkley was 46 years old and living in Crown Inn Yard, according to Rawlinson’s report when she died on 27th September, during the cholera outbreak, in Alnwick in 1849.

We know she was unmarried, as she was Miss Jane Berkley in the Newcastle Courant report of the deaths in Alnwick. On the entry in the Bishops Transcripts for her burial she was recorded as living in Market Place (see above)

We researched under various other spellings of Jane’s surname, with no greater success. Do you know any more about this woman who was buried anonymously together with many others in a mass grave at the rear of St. Michael’s Church??

Research on the 136 dead has been carried out by the Alnwick Branch of the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society.
