Catherine Lockey

Died October 6th 1849

According to the Newcastle Guardian on 13/10/1849, Catherine was the wife of John Lockey, shoemaker when she died on 6th October.
Catherine was born Catherine Robinson in about 1814 but we are not sure where. Her parents were George ( b 18/1/1789) and Isabella Robinson and George was a pitman, born in Longhoughton.

They had at least two daughters born in Rennington.

 

Catherine gave birth to her first child Phillis Hedley Robinson,  baptised in Alnwick on 27/1/1839. Catherine was then ‘a single mother ‘. Perhaps Phillis’ father was a Mr Hedley. On the 1841 census George Robinson was widowed, living at Willoughby’s Bank, Clayport Street. Also living there was Elizabeth (15) and Phillis (2). There was no sign of Catherine on the census.

Catherine married John Lockey, a shoemaker in 1842, living in Clayport Street, and had three more children : John b 1843 : Jemima Elizabeth born 16/3/1845 but died less than a year later, on 26/2/1846 : and Ann Jane b 25/4/1847.

Just over two years later, Catherine died from Cholera and was buried in a mass grave at the rear of St. Michael’s Church.

In 1851 John Lockey was 34, so born about 1817, and there were two children living with him in Clayport. These were their son John now 8 and ‘daughter-in-law ‘ Phillis Robinson, although we would call her a step-daughter now, aged 12. Annie Jane Lockey was staying with an aunt and uncle, Phillis and George Stafford in Alnmouth. George was a miller. Annie Jane was still with her aunt and uncle ten years later when she was 14. We couldn’t find out where she was in 1871, but ten years later she was married to John Alexander Manners, a joiner, and lived in Morpeth until her early death in 1890 age 42.

Meanwhile Annie Jane’s brother John Lockey became a shoemaker like his father and moved to Longhoughton. He married but didn’t have children.

 

What happened to Phillis? We have no idea! She was not recorded after the 1851 census as Phillis Robinson. Perhaps she married, and moved away?
